Adulthood: A Synonym For "Legally Stupid."

More and more here in America, the idea of adulthood has become a digit-based system inherent not on capabilities, but on whether one is legally liable for oneself. In this system, we pride ourselves in knowing that the cosmos seems to grant us inherent powers giving us the ability to think for ourselves and do as we please from the moment we're liable for ourselves in any court ruling. To become an adult in my eyes, one must go through rigorous tests in the domains of respect and accomplishment, learning from mistakes and becoming a better person overall. Hence my ideas of adulthood clash with American ideals quite frequently.

It should be noted though that the idea of the magical age of 18 is rather hilarious. We consider one to become an adult at this age, but in all honesty all this age says is "you are now legally obligated for your own stupidity." From the age of 16 onwards, one can already legally drink, smoke, drive, and do many other things that we typically associate with "adulthood" the only difference is that one simply needs another who is legally obligated for their, and your wellbeing to be nearby in case you do something stupid.

If anything, in this situation, the sixteen-year-old whom goes about these acts in a legal manner is actually MORE mature than the 18 or 21 year old, as they are taking the precaution of having another around them during such leisure activities for their own, and other's protection. In this day and age, one such as myself despises the saying "you aren't an adult yet" on the basis of being more than capable of going about day-to-day activities in a mature manner far surpassing others of similar, and in some case older ages.

Let it be stated then, that adulthood here in America is in fact no sign of being any more intelligent, or wise than your timely-challenged bretheren, but in fact a sign of simply being able to do stupid things without the supervision of others. If we as Americans ignore someone's opinion or thoughts on the basis of age, than we are limiting ourselves severly and enforcing just as much of a hateful bias as any relating to gender or race.

I finish this rant, by stating that Adulthood, or rather becoming of legal age, is in fact a synonym for "legally obligated for one's own stupidity"
